Every Third Thursday: Survival Split

The guys at Signal killing it again. Interesting, trying to bring back the K2 Clicker-esque bindings (I told you that shit was coming back).

These guys seem like they have more fun doing what they’re doing than most.

Large Wet Slab Avalanche – Y Couloir

Saw this over on the meltfreeze Vimeo page. That’ll put a hurtin’ on ya.

BTW, if you haven’t been paying attention note the NWAC reports for damn near everywhere PNW right now.

no bueno

MONDAY STOKE: XDL Playing Snowboards in Switzerland

The guys at Timeline Films have been putting out my favorite web edits by far. Of course most web edits set the bar low with their 99:1 fluff to substance ratio with the usual “oh look here’s joeblow being ‘funny’, oh look here’s joe shotgunning a beer, oh look here we are driving, oh look a rail shot, back to joeblow being ‘funny’ and surrounded by his yesman enabler crew laughing hysterically the end’

The forecast is looking primo for some midweek 24 hour flu, start working that fake sniffle today around the watercooler…

HIKE3 – Full Length Movie

Yup, this place has become ver ‘here’s a vid here’s a vid here’s a vid here’s a post here’s a vid llama llama llama’ lately. Whatever. Here’s a full-lengther for ya.

Avalanche destroys lift in France

Oops, thought I hit post on this the other day when someone sent it my way. Guess not. Monstah slide in France with bonus ‘crapping my pantaloons on the lift’ view.

MONDAY STOKE: Attack of the Storm Factory

Advanced warning: This video is like 2/3 either intro or uninteresting. Minimal Monday stoke is better than no stoke though.

Fast forward to 1:17 in for first bit of goodness, c’mon, that turn looks NIIIIICE. After that head to about 1:36 and see the typical PNW pow days that I used to long for back when I was doing time in California – deep, low vis, flat light goodness!

Ca-POW-eira

I’m not going to call this a *new* trick like I claimed here, as this is really just a twist* on the ol’ ‘last run of the day but never called last run legs shot from too many hike-to runs cruising along not paying attention get caught in the backseat‘ backflip. Powdering my nose, if you will.

I <3 riding pow.

*the twist being I never left the ground

UPDATE: Just got this pic from a buddy who was riding up the road yesterday. He loves pow, too. So sick.

MONDAY STOKE: Provo Bros. Mining Powder at Retallack

13:19 of procrastination below. Below vid is from the Provo brothers (Neil and Ian). Regardless of what you’re making it’s a safe bet their job is better than yours.

“During the winter of 2011, my brother Neil and I were presented with a once in a lifetime opportunity. We were to spend two months embedded in the heart of the Kootenays at the legendary Retallack Lodge. The mission was to shred pow with our good friend Tanner, who was on his comeback, and to help film Retallack:The Movie for Inspired Media Concepts. I took the role of the dedicated time lapse junkie, while Neil was a true on slope camera master. This video is a showcase of our skills behind the camera, as well as a few of our favorite long lens shots from Retallack:The Movie. Time lapses make way for deep powder mining, and a trip into the heart of the “silvery slocan” to see how silver miners conquered the mountains a century ago. Mining for powder in the Selkirk mountains is serious business, and we found out just how serious it can get. We hope you enjoy our short film, and perhaps absorb just a sliver of the energy that is Retallack Lodge in beautiful British Columbia.” ian provo

It’s been good out there all around the PNW, hope everyone has been getting some (note: take a look at the Tues thru Wed PM forecasts and start faking that you’re coming down with something so your Thursday sick call looks legit).

TUESDAY STOKE: Jim Jack and Bird at Ski Hill

Monday stoke on a Tuesday, blogging bankers hours here. The below description from Icicle TV says all that needs to be said about the vid.

A few weeks ago, the team at Icicle TV followed local ski ambassadors Jim Jack and Michael “Bird” Shaffer around for a day of skiing at Ski Hill in Leavenworth. The biggest storm of the season dumped 30″ of pure fluffy powder in town and the guys hit it up.

We were actually working on releasing the piece yesterday, February 19th, when we received word that an unprecedented tragedy had occurred. In one foul swoop, we lost three of the most amazing, nicest people we’ve ever known. Jim Jack, Johnny Brenan, and Chris Rudolph were caught in an avalanche in the Tunnel Creek area in the Stevens Pass backcountry. Today, we have no words to pay proper tribute to these men that meant so much to our community. To lose a hero is hard enough but to lose three is incomprehensible. Until we find the words to express our love for Jim Jack, Johnny, and Chris, the only thing we have to share is our memories and prayers.

We’ve put a lot of thought into whether we should release this video and decided that the world would want to see Jim in his final few weeks, doing what he loved most-skiing powder and spreading the love.

MONDAY STOKE: Baker Banked POV Run

In honor of the Mt. Baker Legendary Banked Slalom this weekend, a multi-day festival of all that’s good in snowboarding, I found this POV edit from last year. Props to the legend Terje on his seventh second(?) (edit: holy shit I was so far off I’m embarassed, not sure what I was thinking, knew he had a few but thought he was around five) roll of gold (note: same Terje that qualified for the finals riding switch ~95/96), and to Temple for making it to the podium for like the eleventy millionth straight time.
