REI Winter Clearance, Backcountry.com Semi-Annual sale start

Just saw that the REI Winter Clearance and Backcountry.com Semi-Annual sale started.

All sorts of avy goodies and other fun stuff on sale. Pretty much every avalanche beacon is 25% off. Shovels by BCA, Voile and and the rest of the usual suspects all around 25% off as well. Definitely worth a look if you’re in the market.

Black Diamond Whippet (and other good stuff) on sale

Just saw that Backcountry.com was doing a mid-winter sale. Some decent stuff on sale, quite a bit of stuff for hitting the BC (skins and shovels and probes oh my!), but the one thing that stood out to me was they had Whippets in stock and on sale. Seriously, hard to find these (at least locally), even harder to find ‘em in stock. Nothing quite says “I’m so eXXXXtreme that I laugh in the face of a certain impaling by riding with this sharp object in my hand” like a self arrest pole.

As always you should see if your local shop will price match before you buy it online!

Backcountry Access Float packs on sale

Was just looking over the backcountry.com Black Friday sale and these definitely caught my eye because 1) they are expensive at full price (and even sale price) 2) I know a ton of you out there have considered picking one up and 3) they are the future once they start getting adopted and economies of scale kick in and bring the price down to everyman level.  They’ve got the Float 18, Float 30 and Float 36 (pictured below) on sale, and while still expensive it’s probably one of the few times you’ll see them on sale.  If you want to see the BCA Float in action you can go here and see a few vids.

Last March I nearly died in an avalanche while backcountry snowboarding in Japan. The slide sucked me under the surface of the snow and beat me within an inch of my life before spitting me out unburied. Hard tellin’ not knowin’, but had I been wearing an avalanche airbag pack that day I would probably have a lot less metal holding my pelvis together right now. The airbag would have helped keep me on the top of the slide and prevented the compression injuries I sustained while ragdolling under the surface.

Backcountry.som semi-annual sale

Just got a message from backcountry.com that if you click through from here you can get to their sale before it goes live to the general public on the 15th.  They’ve always got a TON of stuff for sale and a very consumer friendly return policy (aka lifetime) so check ‘em out if you’re looking for any new gear!

As always I’ll update this post when I see stuff of interest.

A couple shortcuts:

Link to the avalanche gear – beacons, probes, etc. – on sale

Link to mountaineering gear on sale

Screw all the snow stuff, it’s summer, hiking and camping gear sale

Backcountry.com Spring Delay Sale starts today

Just got an email from backcountry.com saying their Spring Delay Sale starts today. Looks to be limited to outerwear, and often things you DON’T want to be caught in the rain in (fleece? really?), but some good deals to be had if you’re in the market for a new rain shell. A few selections that stood out below.

Patagonia Torrentshell on sale

Wet weather protection and the best warranty in the biz

Patagonia Rain Shadow jacket on sale

Another 'gucci for sale

Marmot Aegis jacket on sale

Rain protection from the furry little critter co.

Anyways, stay dry

Avalanche beacon sale

Just saw that backcountry.com was having a sale (yup, it’s that time of year). Noticed they have quite a few beacons and other miscellaneous avalanche safety schwag on sale. Beacons tend to not follow the rest of the gear – i.e. 50% off sales by March – so anytime they are 25% off or so it’s worth checking if you’re in the market.

BCA Tracker

Mammut Pulse

Probably the highest tech beacon there is

Pieps DSP Advanced Smart

This one is kind of odd to me, it’s the Pieps DSP with some updated features – barometer, thermometer and compass. I just find those features odd for something you’ll be wearing on your chest and under your layers. Otherwise, sick beacon.

They’ve also got the Ortovox 3+, Pieps Freeride, Pieps DSP Smart and Ortovox S1 on sale so click to check ‘em out.

Don’t need a beacon but looking for a deal on a shovel or probe? Yeah, those are on sale as well – though I think Feathered Friends in Seattle has better deals right now if you’re looking for something local and you’re a 206er, and hell they may ship.

Anyways, just a heads up.

Backcountry.com sale starts today

Looks like some deals to be had for our just starting today summer. A few choice items below, but if you don’t see what you’re looking for it’s likely on sale.

No PMH approved Phantom 32 to be found, but the Conness 32 is there for under two bills. Lower loft down makes for a slightly heavier/bulkier bag, but if you’re on a budget worth looking at.

Conness 32 for about two bills

If a 32 degree bag is warmer than you need this Kelty Light Year 40 looks checks a lot of boxes for not many benjis. 650 fill down, long version that comes in at 6’6″ long (tallelujah!), under 2 lbs and under $130.

Under $130?? Score!

What’s better than the multple award winning GSI Dualist? The Micro Dualist, of course. Though, in use I’d say it doesn’t provide much more utility than a Jetboil as there’s no frying pan. Still, if you need a setup for two worth looking into.

Yes brobrah, smaller is better

One thing I never leave home without is a flask with a little post-hike relaxation swill. While it’s not the ultrasexy titanium Snow Peak flask this one comes in at a fraction of the cost and 3x the volume. Get your whiskey on in the backcountry, or sip some port and eat some Ritter chocolate while stargazing.

I'm old fashioned. A little rye...a little bitters...
